The Doubling Woods (No. 1)

Turkey Tail Mushrooms (Trametes versicolor), toddler shirt, lichen, artist's hair, weathered wood panel

The Doubling Woods series is about coping mechanisms within absence or neglect. Its title speaks to the madness and magical thinking of loss—the way our minds keep trying to pick up these things that, in the absence of the other, we can only do so much with.

In loss, our relationship with the other continues—only the mutuality of it is not the same. In the absence of the other’s voice, our mind clings to echoes of it. We are prone to infestation. In time, we grow an attachment to that which cannot, or will not, answer back.
